Project Overview

Problem

Introductory biology course is a core-elective that all non-biology majors have to take. Many instructors reported difficulty of getting them engaged with attendance rate being as low as 36%.

Solution

Introducing real-life context, using less jargons, and providing hands on learning materials during class improved attendance rate up to 80%.

Process

  • 1:1 interview with randomly selected learners.
  • Qualitative analysis revealed the underlying reason for low attendance which the learners did not see the class relevant for their day-to-day life or their major.
  • Formed focus group with learners from previous semesters to gain more insights about the learners’ need.
  • Data-driven recommendation was made to the stakeholders.
  • Performed contextual observation for 1 month period as a follow up.

Key Insights and Impact

  • Non-biology major learners were showing low attendance rate due to class being too dry with no context of real world problems that may have impact on them. Also the class material was being taught at a more advanced level.
  • Data-driven recommendation was made to the stakeholders to always start the chapter by incorporating real-life issues (e.g. Photosynthesis with biofuels) to help them stay interested in the subject matter. Hands on learning materials was provided during class to help them stay engaged.
  • Attendance rate went from 36% to 80% within a 2 week of incorporating recommendations which led to opening another section of the course which will bring in over $168k in the fall of 2023.
